When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Around 8:30 a.m. PT, the social platform Reddit began suffering an outage, with the main feed showing errors and over 5,000 reports on the outage tracking site Down Detector.

While it's unclear what caused the apparent X outage, the platform has in recent months faced issues when internet infrastructure platform Cloudflare went down. Late last year, X was one of many websites disrupted when Cloudflare went down in two separate incidents – one on Nov. 18, 2025 and another on Dec. 5, 2025.

Users were reporting a high number of problems with X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter. What we know, according to Down Detector.

X is still struggling with an outage that has intermittently taken the service offline and made it slow to load for much of the morning.

Nearly 15,000 people are experiencing issues with X, formerly Twitter, on Friday afternoon (January 16). According to Down Detector - a site which allows people to report technical issues they are experiencing with apps and websites - 58% of the reports are due to the app, 33% because of the website and 7% complaining of the feed or timeline.

Elon Musk's X, formerly Twitter, is down for the second time this week. Nearly 80,000 reports have spiked on Down Detector since around 10am ET Friday morning.

Elon Musk's X.com has experienced a huge global outage today, which started at 9:10am ET and finished around 10:20am ET. We don't know what is causing this yet, but in our own testing, both the X website and app failed to load. At it's peak on Down Detector, we saw over 28,000 outages.
