PennDOT was the first in the nation to develop a Virtual Queue Protection system, which uses our existing changeable message signs to alert travelers of slow or stopped traffic ahead. Traffic changes are detected via real-time statewide traffic speed data collected from vehicle GPS and messages are automatically displayed to alert travelers before they reach the traffic. The more than 1,250 highway miles running Virtual Queue Protection 24/7 have seen real results: • 10% drop in crashes overall
