Back in December we contracted a neighbor to tile about 25 acres. This field we call “Muck” has one of the wettest soils on our whole farm. In a dry year it can be very productive, but most years it probably takes a least a minor yield hit if not a total wipeout. Now that it’s drained it should be perennially productive! To get an idea of its water holding capacity look back to the drought of 2012. This was the best corn field we harvested at 147bu/ac with the muck soil area hitting up to 300bu.
