A cockroach can survive for weeks without its head. Its open circulatory system prevents rapid blood loss, so when the head is removed the wound quickly clots and seals. The insect breathes through small openings called spiracles on its body segments, not through a head. Nerve clusters throughout its body allow basic reflexes and movement even without a central brain.
